Spence is a native of Seattle suburbia; he moved to the city just after he turned eighteen to escape the ’burbs. Barely out of high school, he took up factory work, lacking other prospects. The criminal element around his lower-class neighborhood drove Spence to take up self-defense classes in what spare time he had.
He attracted the attention of John Lee, another Akashic psychic or sorcerer/linear mage, just back from a trip to China. Lee began to look after Spence, teaching him about violence but not for its own sake. A few students like Spence took the offer of some extended, after-hours training, and Lee awakened Spence’s psychic talent, one similar to his own.
After that, Spence’s prospects improved. He landed a job at Boeing and was picking up some real job skills. Even after the bomb fell on the city, the two Akashics hung on, and moved into a new dojo that Morgan chose to finance for them, around the same time that Joshua was spending his resources building Ground Zero. Morgan’s aid came at a crucial time, and it cemented the two psychics’ relationship with the junkyard chantry, which up to that time had been tenuous.
Since that time, John Lee was lost in the troubles, and Spence still partly blamed the Technocracy, in spite of their apparent lack of involvement. He inherited a certain amount of distrust for the Technos from Lee, who was around for some of the Ascension War. He’s tried to maintain the dojo and it’s barely functional, but he spends most of his time at the nightclub now, working security.
Spence feels no twinges from his Avatar, and would seem to not have a full Awakening in his destiny. He looks like a man who works with his hands, built strong with no beer gut. He likes muscle shirts and tank tops, and other loose, comfortable clothes one might find on a bodybuilder or martial artist (as he is both). He’s introspective, and self-deprecating about his physique, however; his talent for psychokinesis makes him take the muscles less seriously.
