Mari’s history among the Garou Nation is well-known, as a packmate of the Silver Fang Jonas Albrecht. Their time together culminated with the Fangs’ downfall, however; although Mari and Evan Heals-the-Past were with Albrecht at the last, they could not prevent his death at the hands of Zhyzhak — or prevent the Silver Fangs’ corruption and shame from being revealed. Evan died of his wounds from fighting the eldest of the Black Spiral Dancers, leaving Mari alone and ashamed, devastated by the loss of her packmates and her friendly rival, Albrecht. He was supposed to have redeemed the Silver Fangs, and it seemed as if he had, right up to the end.
Returned to New York City, lost in Harano, the sept at Central Park took Mari in and protected her. Even when the combined forces of the Wyrm began to harass, then attack the caern, Mari was spared a fight until the sept was finally destroyed — destruction that was perhaps hastened by the arrival of Morgan and Joshua, who came looking for Mari and some understanding of what happened to Albrecht and the Silver Fangs. It was a fall from grace that they had revealed, even participated in, but failed to make amends.
Mari lacked the will to fight the wizards on it, and accompanied them on their mission to make up for what they hadn’t finished before, to bring the Silver Fangs back into the good fight. Mari still lashes out at the mages for their failings, however, when she can resist Harano enough to muster her Rage. As some time has passed with the irascible Fury in their company, however, Mari has lost even more — Morihei High-Mountain, the other survivor from the Central Park sept — and gained the attention of a new, untainted Silver Fang cub, Alicia. Presented with the reflection of her own sorrow as Alicia mourns Morihei’s death, this may have finally been enough to snap Mari out of her depression.
She was given a Grand Klaive of Glass Walker make, called “Thundering House-cleaver,” a blade held by the Bone Gnawer elder Mother Larissa until her death in Central Park. The klaive was crafted in the style of a Chinese dadao or great sword, built for slashing and chopping power. Mari’s reluctance to carry and wield it may be due to her preference for her more natural weapons, or her lingering sense of despair. Still, being in the company of other Garou again has led Mari to begin training in Klaivaskar, the Garou art of klaive dueling.
