Matthew hails from Providence, Rhode Island by a family of content, lapsed Catholics. Like most youngsters he rebelled against his parents’ choices, or lack of mores as he saw it. Although he studied occult, black arts, he sought to turn them somehow to a higher purpose. He was convinced that if true evil existed in the world, then there must be something good as well. Turning to scripture and beyond, he consulted banned ‘holy’ books and worse, and created — or perhaps recreated — sorcerous paths calling on God’s light and wrath rather than hell’s fire.

He sought out, and had his first brush with the supernatural while still a teenager. His Avatar wasn’t ready for it, though, and so Matthew did not quite Awaken. Still, he commanded a path of fire that linear mages might conventionally call Hellfire, but from a ‘good’ source, as Matthew thought it. Some years later, he was brought into the Chorus after forming a brief alliance of convenience with a Chorister mage and an Imbued hunter against a Spectral Risen.

Matthew joined a guardian order, the Remnant Knights of St. George. They welcome ‘linear mages’ who have something to offer. After graduating high school, perhaps a little late, he left Providence. He ended up in Los Angeles, training, and taking on anarch vampires and, later, Kuei-jin. He was in LA when all hell broke loose (literally). In the chaos of the quake, he lost track of his cabal, except for one partner, the enchanter, Veronica Frye. They retreated from ‘Hell-A’ and moved up the coast to regroup.

The Seattle chantry made overtures to the pair of sorcerers, but it was the bomb that finally brought them together — and finally Awakened Matthew. His Avatar is much more pushy now, constantly urging him in new directions, as if there isn’t enough time left to waste. Not that there is. Life at the chantry keeps them plenty busy.

Matthew’s Avatar manifests in subtle angelic visitations, revelations and visions only he can see. They reaffirm his drive to blaze new paths, explore new mysteries, and fight new threats coming out of the darkness.

Image: Matthew has cultivated a rough look much like Veronica’s, looking more like a hardened, streetwise thug than a holy warrior. He keeps his tools and weapons hidden until they’re needed. But a certain sense of the sacred shines through; he has the look, and the experience of a hunter, but the violence doesn’t weigh on him. Holding to a righteous cause helps.

Common foci: Prayer, the Bible and other religious texts, both ‘light’ and ‘dark’; blessed water, holy symbols, blades
