Rebecca is an Army brat from Germany, which is where the chantry found her during the brief time they held territory there. She was taken in around age 17, and a few years have passed since then. Her extended family, Sleepers, have given up looking for her, and by now they may well be dead. As far as they know, Rebecca simply went missing somewhere in Germany.
The truth of it is that she and her mother were kidnapped by a serial killer, some time after her father was posted to an Army base in Stuttgart. The killer lured her father to come out alone to rescue them, raped and butchered Rebecca’s mother in front of her, and would have murdered Rebecca as well. Her father’s skills and weapons came as a surprise, and he was able to free her before the killer took him down. The experience sparked her Awakening, and her first act as a will-worker was revenge.
Rebecca was briefly held in a psychiatric ward, but she escaped thanks to a lapse in sedation. She took to the streets with all the makings of an Orphaned vigilante. But Andrew Whitaker, a Euthanatos mage who joined Joshua’s Construct War out of a sense of fate, picked up on articles in the local newspapers, and caught up with Rebecca. The Technocracy at the time was reeling in Germany, or else they might have found her first.
Andrew took great care in mentoring this new student, treating her as part of his destiny’s call. And for a time, the mages from the Seattle chantry, bolstered by outsiders like Whitaker and Terpsichore, held the gains they’d made. The Reckoning and the Avatar Storm changed all that. The Storm flayed the magickal soul from her mentor, and broke his will. For her part, Rebecca also felt like a killer, bereft of a soul from the trauma she’d been through. Her dependence supported Whitaker, and this kept him going for years, though he was clearly battling suicidal tendencies.
When the bomb fell on Seattle some years later, Whitaker was among those who died in the explosion. By this time, though, Rebecca could fend for herself — and she does, as Ground Zero’s lead Sentinel and guardian. In her mentor’s absence, her need for a role model was largely replaced by Joshua, another trained killer, willing to do horrible, necessary things. As he has suffered from meting out torture, murder and Gilgul when required, her admiration has grown. Even he would be disturbed by it, if he understood her.
Image: Rebecca is tough, strong, and dangerous, even inhumane. She can’t help but look attractive, even if she keeps it clean-cut and kind of buff. It’s not as if she really tries. When she speaks, however, her generally uncaring manner shows through. Her expression is cold and calculating, and the observer may not want to know just what she’s calculating.
